Appin Massacre Memorial Ceremony 2024 @ Cataract Dam Picnic Area
Apr 14 @ 11:00 am – 3:30 pm

The memorial will be held this year on Sunday, 14 April, 2024 from 11am to 3.30pm at the Cataract Dam picnic area, Appin

There will be a free BBQ, and participants are advised to pack a picnic.

Following a difficult year and the impact of the effort to fight for a Voice to Parliament, this year’s Appin Massacre memorial offers an opportunity for our community to come together in an active gesture of truth telling and healing.

This year marks the 208th anniversary of the Appin Massacre. This memorial is held each year at Cataract Dam near Appin, to remember D’harawal and Gandangarra people who were killed in the massacre of 1816. At least 14 women, men and children died in a massacre that was the direct result of the orders of Governor Lachlan Macquarie.

Appin is one of many publicly acknowledged massacre sites in Australia.  These places, plus many more only remembered by Aboriginal people, are places of pain and trauma. The Appin Massacre Memorial represents a tangible and public acknowledgement of this part of Australia’s real history.

The annual commemorative service at Appin is an opportunity for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to come together in a spirit of reconciliation to acknowledge past wrongs, pay respect to the victims and make a contribution to collective healing.

Hosted by the Winga Myamly Reconciliation Group and the Aboriginal communities of Macarthur, the memorial involves a community sausage sizzle followed by a commemorative service that includes performances by local Aboriginal dancers and musicians.

Participants are advised to bring appropriate footwear, hats, sunscreen and bottled water. Fold up chairs are also recommended as seating is limited. Food variety is limited so those with special dietary requirements are advised to bring something of their own. There is accessible parking and a short walk to the memorial site. There will be a bus service for those unable to walk the short distance to the site.

Horizon @ Sydney Opera House
Jun 12 @ 7:30 pm – Jul 13 @ 9:00 pm

From two of the world’s great First Nations comes a brand-new work: Horizon. It’s the place where sea meets sky, the horizon we all look to, the compass that guides us home.

This event is on at various times. Recommended for ages 12+

Horizon joins cultural forces across oceans and eons

There is a place between sea and sky—a sacred realm, where the sun rises and falls and the light is new.

From two of the world’s great First Nations comes a brand-new work: Horizon. Some call it a feeling, some call it the mother spirit. It’s the place where sea meets sky, the horizon we all look to, the compass that guides us home.

In Bangarra’s first mainstage cross-cultural collaboration, leading Māori choreographer and Arts Laureate Moss Te Ururangi Patterson joins beloved Bangarra alumna Deborah Brown. Together they guide Bangarra’s award-winning ensemble in stories that honour their mother countries and the spirit that calls them home.
